about
This track is based on idea I've been throwing around ever since I first read it. The idea is: Suppose the Christian God had created us, and made himself known to us blatantly, obviously, throughout our life. Suppose he talked to us one on one, and we could see him. And suppose he said: 'If you follow me, you can live forever - but if not, you will die.' Every reasonable person would choose eternal life with God, but 'choose' is the wrong 'choice' of words in this scenario. We would not discover God, and choose to follow him because we wanted to. We would not respond to his gifts in love. We would be terrified, and any pretence to a moral dimension in life would be a facade, unavoidably and completely. This song describes the above situation.
As humans we forget, and we allow ourselves to be deceived. This capacity for self deception gives legitimacy to our decisions concerning God - our minds wander away and forget him if we allow them to. Matthew 7:7 reads 'Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.' By becoming as distant as God is, he does not stifle love or moral responsibility, enabling us to freely turn to him. But he is not entirely distant either - when we seek, we find.
lyrics
I woke, and saw for the first time
A picture printed on my eyes
A figure, glowing brightest white
Its eyes warm but dispassionate
It said
“I am Praesidio,
And I created you.”
I grew
And nights merged into days
All the time I felt its gaze.
It told me
That if I would just believe
I would be given everything.
It said
“I am Praesidio,
And I created you.”
You know, I never knew that
Love
Could so quickly drain
Away, and what I needed
Was the gift of space
But pressure built and
When I had found my voice
At the end
I didn’t have a choice
I went
And followed close behind
In its chains it trapped my mind
It wasn't
right, it wasn't wrong
It was self preservation all along
